Balmoral School of Piping and Drumming

June 13-18, 2010   Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California
Alasdair Gillies, Brian Donaldson, James MacColl, George Balderose, and Andrew Hoinacki teaching drumming

The central focus of the Balmoral School is to provide high quality musical instruction for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students in small classes of up to six students. Lessons are structured and highly focused, and instructors are selected on the basis of their ability to help students overcome problems. The classes are usually oriented toward the teaching of new tunes and the polishing and refining of existing tunes. Instruction is geared toward individual needs. For example, beginner and intermediate classes will cover music fundamentals such as rhythm, tempo, tuning and tone production, as well as execution and expression. Students usually learn to better control their instrument and put more expression and tone in their music. Advanced students can elect to train for and study their tune sets for major competitions in North America and Scotland. At least one beginner class will be with a principal instructor. Qualified assistant instructors will also teach beginner classes.

July 31 - August 8, 2010
North Idaho College
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

In the tradition of its founder, Lt. Col. John McEwing, the Coeur d'Alene Summer School of Piping and Drumming (CSSPD) offers instruction to students of all skill levels, from beginners to professionals. This year, the course is a one-week (Saturday through Sunday) immersion in all facets of piping and highland drumming.

Chief instructor in piping will be Andrew Wright of Dunblane, Scotland. The balance of the school's faculty is made up of 5-6 highly qualified piping and drumming instructors from all parts of North America.

Our Chief Drumming Instructor will be John Fisher from Victoria, British Columbia. He is a former North American drumming champion and has played with the world famous Shotts and Dykehead drum corps under the leadership of Alex Duthart. John has served as a faculty member of the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, ands works as a session drummer in Los Angeles and Canada.

Small-group classes meet for 7 to 8 hours per day. Piping subjects include pipe maintenance, tuning, blowing, expression, and composition. In addition to their class instructor, students will have the opportunity to work with the chief instructor. Drummers will work on practice pads, but are encouraged to bring their drums.
