The St Andrews Society of Sacramento – May Saltyre
I would like those of you who may not be so active to consider helping out if you can. Our St Andrews events can always use more help, particularly next year’s Burns Supper in January. Because it is the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns’ birthday, our committee is looking to make it even more special than usual. The planning has already started so let me know if you would like to help.
We also need a member to volunteer for the St Andrews Games Committee to help out in the St Andrews tent at the Woodland and Pleasanton Games. We had our booth at Woodland and thank you to the brothers who helped set it up, man it, and take it down again. Chuck

* * * * * St Andrew’s Welcomes Northern Ireland Drum Major competitors and Minster for Arts, Leisure and Culture. Contributed by Gordon Scott
The Board approved a grant to provide hospitality and memory gifts to seven Drum Major champions from Northern Ireland who came to participate in the Caledonian Club of Sacramento’s 132nd Anniversary Sacramento Valley Scottish Games and Festival. The Society also presented welcome tokens to the Minister of Arts, Leisure and Culture for the Northern Ireland Executive, the Honorable Edwin Poots, who also visited the Games on Saturday, April 26, 2008 with staff and a member of the British Embassy from Washington, D.C..
At the 2007 edition of the Games, Brian Wilson, 2004 World Champion – Adult discussed with Angie Roddan, Chair of the Games Drum Major venue, the possibility of a group of young competitors from Northern Ireland, where drum major competition is fierce, coming over to participate in the SVSG&F. Angie was enthusiastic and Brian returned home to Northern Ireland to work on it from his end.
In January 2008 before leaving to compete in Australia and New Zealand, Brian reported that it didn’t look like things (funding) were going to work out for 2008; but he would aim for 2009.
Well, good things do happen. In early April, Brian got word, while he was in New Zealand, that the Minister for Arts, Leisure and Culture for Northern Ireland, Mr. Poots, would be contributing $26,000.00 and along with funding from the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, Northern Ireland, that would enable the six youngsters and three parents to make the trip.
He quickly notified Angie that he would be accompanied by: Ryan Ferry (age 18); World Champion 2007-Juvenile; World Champion 2003-Junior Lindsey Hamilton (age 16); World Champion 2006-Junior; European, and All Ireland Champion Elizabeth Sloan (age 17); World Champion 2004-Junior; European, and All Ireland Champion Emma Barr (age 8); European Champion 2007 Lauren Abraham (age 11); Cowal Champion 2007 Dale Fisher (age 14); British Champion 2007
Along with moms: Valerie Hamilton, Helena Abraham and Jackie Barr.
Together with Brian Wilson (of course), 2004 World Champion-Adult; 6 time New Zealand Champion, 4 time Australian Champion; 3 time South African; 2 time European; 1 time Germany; 1 time Beligum, and 2 place World’s twice, they would be the largest foreign participation in any Northern American Drum Major competition.
To help commemorate their visit the Society put together a welcome packet of a T shirt for each competitor and mom that had the California Bear Flag on the front, a refrigerator magnet of a California poppy, some See’s candy, and for the kids a campaign type button that read: The Governator – He’s Back, with a picture of Arnold on it.
To mark the visit of Minister Poots and his party, the Society gave each of them a lapel pin of the Great Seal of California.
Everyone also received a letter of welcome from the Society as well.
I received many expressions of thanks from the young people, their moms and the Minister and his party. We can be proud of the welcome we extended to these visitors and the honor they showed the Sacramento Scottish Community in attending the Games and sharing their talent and experience with our home grown competitors. They got a chance to see a bit of our area, toured the Capitol and attended a River Cats baseball game, and competed in 90 degree weather, a totally new experience for them.
